  • Cookies: cookies are used as part of the use of the website. Users can deactivate cookies using their browser settings.
  • Images: photos and video are taken at our tournaments and events, on which participants and visitors may be recognisable.

Use of personal data

The personal data collected from users is used to provide and improve website services and to maintain a secure environment. More specifically, the data is used for the following purposes:

  • access and use of the website by the user;
  • management of the operation and optimisation of the website;
  • organisation of the conditions of use of the payment services;
  • verification, identification and authentication of the data transmitted by the user;
  • offering the user the possibility of communicating with other users of the website;
  • implementation of user assistance;
  • management of any disputes with users;
  • sending of commercial and advertising information, according to the user's preferences.

Sharing personal data with third parties

Personal data may be shared with third-party companies in the following cases:

  • when the user uses payment services, for the implementation of these services, the website is in contact with third-party banking and financial companies with which it has signed contracts;
  • when the user publishes information accessible to the public in the free comment areas of the website;
  • when the website uses the services of service providers to provide user support, advertising and payment services. These service providers have limited access to the user's data in order to provide these services, and are contractually obliged to use this data in accordance with the provisions of the applicable regulations on the protection of personal data;
  • if required by law, the website may transmit data in order to respond to claims made against the website and to comply with administrative and legal proceedings. If the website is involved in a merger, acquisition, sale of assets or receivership, it may be required to sell or share all or part of its assets, including personal data. In this case, users will be informed before any personal data is transferred to a third party.

Photos and video at our events

Photos and video are taken at our tournaments and events. Chess & Mates uses this material for its own communication and promotion: the website, social media, print, newsletters and press releases. We do not sell images and do not use them for third-party advertising.

  • Atmosphere shots — a view of the hall, a round at the boards, a prize-giving — are published on the basis of our legitimate interest in making our work known (art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
  • Targeted images, in which one recognisable person is the subject, such as a portrait or a posed photo, are published only with consent. For minors we ask the parent or guardian.
  • Whoever registers a player for a tournament acknowledges this clause and informs the player they are registering. That is an acknowledgement, not consent: consent that is a condition of taking part is not freely given.
  • You can object at any time to the use of images in which you are recognisable. Email chessenmates@gmail.com or speak to us at the event. We will then remove the image from the channels we run ourselves.
  • We keep images in our archive for as long as they are relevant to our communication, and delete them on request.

Images already taken up by the press or by third parties cannot always be withdrawn. In that case we will pass on the contact details we have.

Security and confidentiality

The website implements organisational, technical, software and physical digital security measures to protect personal data against alteration, destruction and unauthorised access. However, it should be noted that the Internet is not a completely secure environment and the website cannot guarantee the security of the transmission or storage of information on the Internet.
